The short version: Thiruvananthapuram Central (TVC), at Thampanoor, is the nearest at about 1.2 km, and most long-distance trains end there. Use the table to see where your own train actually stops. If your ticket says Kochuveli or Trivandrum North, you are not getting off at Central, so budget the extra half hour. From any station, ask the driver for East Fort. Autos in Kerala run on a meter that starts at ₹30 for the first 1.5 km; from Central the metered fare is usually ₹40 to ₹50, though drivers often ask ₹50 to ₹80 up front. Distances are road distances to the East Fort drop point and vary slightly by route.

Thiruvananthapuram Central and Thampanoor are the same station under two names. Drivers use both, so either will get you there.

All of them end at the same place. East Fort is the landmark every driver in the city knows, and the temple name alone sometimes is not. Buses display East Fort on the board and never the temple.

From the airport

Six kilometres from the terminal to the gopuram

Trivandrum International is one of the closest major airports to a temple of this size anywhere in India. The prepaid taxi counter is inside the terminal, the rate is fixed, and the drive takes about twenty minutes outside peak hours.

App cabs work too, but the pickup point is a walk from arrivals and the saving is small. On a late night landing, the prepaid counter is the simpler choice. Full details in our airport to temple guide.

Two things catch people out. First, check your terminal: Trivandrum has two, on opposite sides of the runway, and the road distance to East Fort is roughly 4 to 7 km depending on which one you land at. Second, do not plan to land and walk straight into a darshan slot. Bags, the dress change and the cloakroom take time, so if your flight lands within two hours of a window closing, aim for the next one. Going back, leave East Fort at least three hours before a domestic departure; the road past Chakai backs up in the evening.

Four steps from the road to the sanctum

Doing these out of order is what costs people time. The shops selling mundus, the free cloakroom and the entrance are in three different directions, and walking back for something you forgot is the most common delay.

Step one Get to East Fort Every route ends here. Tell the driver East Fort rather than the temple name and you will not be misheard.

Step two Park or pay off the driver There is no drop point at the gate itself. The last two hundred metres are on foot for everyone.

Step three Change and deposit Buy a mundu at the shops on the approach road, then leave footwear, phone and bag at the free cloakroom.

Step four Join the queue Follow current temple signs and staff instructions to reach the visitor entrance.

What the map does not tell you about Fort

The distances are short and the roads are good. The friction is entirely in the details around them, and most of it comes down to what you tell a driver and when you arrive.

Saying it so drivers understand

Ask for East Fort, not Padmanabhaswamy. Every auto and bus driver in the city knows East Fort.
Thiruvananthapuram Central and Thampanoor are the same station. Use either name.
Padma Theertham is the tank in front of the temple and is a useful landmark if you get turned around.

Arriving for the early slots

Buses do not run at 3:00 AM. For Nirmalya Darshanam, book an auto or taxi the night before.
App cabs are unreliable in the small hours. A hotel arranged car is the safer plan.
The shops selling mundus open early but not all night, so arrive already dressed for that slot.

Driving yourself

Fort is a dense old quarter with narrow lanes and one way stretches. There is no parking at the temple gate and no drop off point closer than about two hundred metres.

Paid lots operate around the area at 30 to 50 rupees. On festival days they fill early, and the walk in from wherever you find space can be considerably longer.

If you are staying at Kovalam

Allow for roughly sixteen kilometres by road, with actual travel time depending on traffic and route. If you plan for the 8:30 AM window, leave enough time to travel, prepare and complete entry checks; queue length varies by date.

Coming in for the 4:30 PM evening session means returning in heavy traffic, so most people who stay at the beach do the temple in the morning.

Combining with the afternoon closure

The published darshan schedule has a midday break before evening windows; check the current schedule and plan your return accordingly.
Kuthiramalika Palace is a hundred metres away and fills part of that gap.
The Napier Museum quarter is 4 km north and is the usual choice for the afternoon break.

Arriving from outside Kerala

Trains from Chennai, Bengaluru and Mumbai terminate at Thiruvananthapuram Central, so there is no stop to miss.
Kochi is four and a half hours by road, five by train on the coastal line.
Direct flights reach Trivandrum from most Indian metros and from the Gulf.
